THE ROOFIE FOUNDATION STATISTICS : UPDATED OCT 2008
The statistics below represent the number of people (up to January 2008) who have telephoned the Roofie Foundation help-line claiming that they have been the victims of drug related rape and sexual abuse through having their drinks spiked.
These figures do NOT nclude telephone calls from members of the public who have rung to inform us of drink spiking incidents that do not concern rape or sexual abuse. It is worth noting that the number of these calls has dramatically risen ever since the smoking ban came into force. The main aim of these drink spiking attacks seems to be to facilitate robbery, as a sick joke, or as an act of manevolence.
They do not include telephone calls to the Scottish help-line (established in April 2005).

Statistical Analysis:
The crime of drug rape appears to have peaked and now, albeit slowly, is beginning to drop. This could be due to a number of factors -
- People are stopping ringing the help-line or are unaware of our help-line number.
- People are more aware of the problem and, due to various awareness campaigns take greater care with their drinks.
- The awareness and media campaigns that have been undertaken over the years are beginning to kick in.
Statistical Summary:
- The high incidents of drug rape in cities and high areas of population only shows that more people tend to go out, therefore more are at risk.
- Woman aged from 30 - 50+ are most at risk, but no awareness campaign has ever been created to target this age group.
- Public houses are the most common places where drink spiking takes place.
- Many people are drink spiked at work related events.
- Only 10-15% of those attacked have reported the offence to the police, from which no convictions have been obtained. Over half of those who did report their attack to the police, felt their treatment was poor.
- The crime crosses all age and social groups.
- As British holidaymakers are being attacked abroad we conclude that drug rape is also widespread on the continent, especially around the Mediterranean holiday resorts.
- There are no trained drug-rape specialist counsellors for these survivors.
- Very few cases ever come to court.
- The workplace, and work related events are also great danger areas.
